In a world of ‘trolling’ and ‘bodyshaming’…

where more than 90 percent of girls aged 15 to 17 years want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance, with body weight ranking the highest, body image becomes an important and pervasive issue that young people seldom have the opportunity to talk about openly.

Presented in Southpaw’s trademark flowing dance theatre narrative, Bodytalks initiated that dialogue, examining the pressures young people face pursuing an unrealistic normative ideal of ‘beauty’.

Juxtaposing the surreal yet fascinating world of ‘The Gym’ with the startling statistics around negative body image and body shaming, Bodytalks worked to neutralise the intimidating façade of gym culture, and undercut the industry perpetuated by glistening topless men and scantily clad women. BodyTalks is a candid, reflective piece that invites people to think about self perception and how we sometimes miss the beauty that others see in us.
