Catherine Johns

Catherine is working with Southpaw to review and develop the company’s strategy, business development and communications. She has a long history in encouraging innovation, applying creative thought, and pioneering new approaches to developing value propositions. Currently CEO of Kielder Observatory, one of the most successful public outreach science centres in the UK, she was formerly Innovation and Business Growth Director for Business Durham, leading on initiatives to systematically apply open innovation thinking to societal challenges, and open them up to stimulate innovative activity in the private sector.

She is a co-author of the book ‘Areas of Innovation in a Global World: Concept and Practice’, and founded the ‘Women in IASP’ global network to encourage women in innovation to connect and collaborate across the world. Catherine is the founder of Dance Ventures Ltd, which helps creative companies articulate what makes them unique, so they can attract new audiences, and impress potential funders and investors. Catherine is on the board of the Campaign for Science and Engineering, a national panel member for Innovate UK’s £300M Strength in Places Fund, and has previously served as Board Director of Generator, the UK’s leading music development agency, and Helix Arts.​
